The Midsummer Classic

for baseball, BBQ or just fun!

The first Major League Baseball All-Star Game was played on July 6, 1933, at Comiskey Park in Chicago. The “Midsummer Classic,” as it came to be known, was created by Arch Ward, a sports editor for the Chicago Tribune, as a one-time exhibition for the city’s Century of Progress Exposition.

Due to its massive success, it became an annual tradition. Key highlights from that historic day: The Final Score: The American League defeated the National League 4-2.

Historical First: Babe Ruth, playing for the American League, hit the first All-Star Game home run in the third inning.

Attendance: Over 49,000 fans attended the game, offering a much-needed morale boost during the Great Depression.

Sultan of Swat

Babe Ruth was a prodigious Whiskey drinker and an equally prodigious hot dog eater. As the person who hit the first homerun in MLB history. We honor his legacy with this killer whiskey based cocktail.

Use a lighter style of scotch or bourbon. Not one that is overly smoky or peaty. The final cocktail will be more balances

“Midsummer Classic”

The first all-star game was played in 1933. While baseball did not get integrated until Jackie Robinson’s entrance in 1942, it has become a wonderful mix of countries and ethnicities from around the world. Rum for our Latin American neighbors, sloe gin representing our British Cricket ancestry, Star Fruit for our southeast Asian players, crème de banana because it’s delicious!

Red Ale for topping

Garnish: 3 slices of Star Fruit for the All Stars

Glassware:

Highball or other tall festive glass

In a cocktail shaker add all ingredients except ale. Add ice and shake vigorously. Strain into highball glass, top with ale and garnish
